DIANI BEACH

“What were you before you met me?"

"I think I was drowning"

"And what are you now?"

"Water.”— Ocean Vuong

Dear Motherland, love me and lead me.

fuchsia blossoms

scorched foliage and skin

bathed in endless sunlight

and dipped

in the sweet serenity of solitude.

Thank you, 2020, for the growth. And the scars. Because of you, I am stronger. We are stronger.

I want to live so densely. lush. and slow in the next few years, that a year becomes ten years, and my past becomes only a page in the book of my life.

Lightly child, lightly. Learn to do everything lightly.

The ocean sent me…

To be a witch
They cannot
Burn 🔥

We are sudden stars you and I exploding in our blue black skin ✨ — sonia sanchez

This year I’m back on land where roots are deep and the earth and skin run dark.

And this year I’m coming as all the things rooted in nature that force change and growth.

MEXICO CITY

When Frida calls you out of hiding, you come... You come in the last break of light, with the breaking of everything — it creates an opening, that which speaks, beckons you to quiet dark, private wars and meet that rare power that’s meant to guide you through your life — yourself 🌹

#thereflectionseries #selfportraiture #fridakahlo

We are in this together. Though, we remain socially apart.
Whatever and whomever is blessed to live through this resetting period has no choice but to emerge enriched, enlightened, inspired and, hopefully, healed.

I embrace whatever comes, as long as we can come away evolved. I, for one, hold hope... ❤️🕊

Remember when you used to be able to sit outside and touch stuff? Yeah, me neither...

One Black in Tan, please 🤎🙋🏾‍♀️

Remembering to stand tall and let the light shine in the eye of the storm
🌪
Zola said, “Happiness is nothing but everyday living seen through a veil.” Indeed. A veil of illusion, of desire, of expectation, of greed. Before we all began sheltering in place, how many of us took our daily lives and luxuries for granted? *slowly raises hand*🙋🏾‍♀️ Honestly, I have always held tremendous gratitude for many of the things in my life. I’ve been working remotely for over 3 years, a situation I fought for professionally so I’d ironically have the freedom of movement, globally. 🤍

Now I cherish the ability not to jump a flight, but to step outside to cherish the taking of a healthy breath or holding the person I love without dread of a different kind of toxic exchange or laying in the grass with the sun on my face without fear someone will break 6 ft of space between us. For those struggling to lift the veil and breathe life fully again, I encourage you to show gratitude for all the Earth has given us by going for a short 10 minute walk and honoring her grace and generosity when you do. 🖤

Practice breathing work to help center yourself. Ground yourself in peaceful meditation when the thoughts in your head become too loud. Move your body to release stress and tension. Finally, please stay connected. Reach out to a friend or anyone outside of your immediate space, extending your loving energy and vibration outward to offer and accept help and healing.

ZANZIBAR

Zanzi, you had me at breakfast 😋🍳 and I’m not a breakfast person... Well, until you introduce freshly squeezed juice, ripe tropical fruit, rich East African coffee, avocado toast, Ugali, Roti, masala-spiced beans... Repeat, I’m not a breakfast person.

#swahili #african #arab #indian #fusion #africanfood #eastafrica

Let’s get our girls.

I was truly conflicted about posting this picture. These beautiful girls came rushing onto the deck where I was having breakfast today.

They were walking along the beach asking for money when the tallest, and clearly the oldest, girl (in the blue head wrap) saw me and stopped. She stared, astonished. Immediately, she began pointing and calling to the others. When gathered, the girls rushed past the private wooden gate, separating beach and cottage and onto my deck. They fell onto bended knees and raised their pails. It almost broke me.
I am used to getting curious stares and snickers and shocked looks and meeting glances of both envy and confusion. But begging, especially by women and girls, gets me every time. There is enough wealth in this world that no one should be poor. However, moving through certain countries, the poverty is as certain as the water there will be turquoise blue and warm.

After entering, the girls were shooed away, past the gate and back onto the beach by a male hotel staff member. I followed and when he went away I gave them money, of course. Even though, I know it wouldn’t be theirs alone to keep. However, I asked if I could take their picture. They fell together in a stiff line, like puppets. I said, “please share that money with one another and stay close. You’ll need each other. And know, you don’t have to perform. At least, not for me.” One of the girls dropped the piddly coins from her pail onto the sand and placed it her head. Then I took this shot.

#everydayafrica #documentaryphotography #beachlife #tanzaniangirl #worknoplay #friendship #zanzibar

For the record. I’d give up everything I’ve fought for in this life to return to the sea and be a mermaid 🧜🏿‍♀️ There’s more life inside you. Go within. Go without. There’s more. More. More...

After traveling throughout southern Europe, from country to country, end to end, for 4 weeks, moving from my beloved Portugal to stunning Italy to my newest flame, Greece, with a quick stopover (airport only) to quickly meet up with Singapore, I finally arrived in Denpasar, Bali, exhausted and without any more love to dispense. Or so I thought.
The 6-hour leap ahead in time from Greece to Indonesia and the 30-degree Fahrenheit spike in temperature didn’t help any. By the time I got to baggage reclaim, I was ready to reclaim my sanity, and any knowledge about why I had decided to make this trek from Western world to Eastern sphere. My body was sore from another long-haul flight in a month’s time and internally screamed at me, “Bed, bed, bed!” Keep in mind, I still had 2 online lectures to prepare for the morning, upcoming midterm papers to grade and a new business that required my execution.
Exiting the airport with baggage finally in hand, I was greeted on arrival by Ketut, the driver, who would deliver me to my bungalow in Sanur. Two quick things to note here regarding digs selection in Bali, or any tropical locale for that matter.

Bungalow versus Villa

When considering accommodations in the tropics, take care to consider whether you might want to stay in a bungalow or a villa. Knowing little about Bali firsthand, I thought staying in an open-air bungalow would be the perfect way to happily immerse myself in Bali’s tropical climate and lifestyle. Note again, the word: “happily.” I was soon immersed in Bali’s sticky, buggy climate and, was not so happy about it. Especially at night. I was greeted by round-the-clock heat and nighttime mosquito attacks. The kitchen was well-stocked with 2 fans, but the kitchen was virtually outside in the open, as was the bathroom. The A/C in the bedroom helped to keep some of the bloodsucking fiends at bay, but no amount of cold blast or mosquito net around my bed was able to save my legs, arms and back from dozens of bites by week’s end. So, be sure to load up on bug repellant before your arrival! You can buy some on the island, but it can sometimes be hard to get spray or lotion for the body in local minimarkets. They tend to sell spray for the room itself. You can easily find the much-needed protection at the supermarket. And, of course, this will not be foolproof. In other words, expect to get bitten, and often. Alas, this is life in the jungle. Bugs and jungle creatures, of all sorts, will make their way into your living space, day and night.
While in Bali, you can expect to be greeted by both small and giant lizards, Geikos, snails, frogs and, yes, snakes, as well as a plethora of other animals who will mainly remain outside your door. That said, a bungalow tends to provide a more rural tropical experience. You may find your kitchen and bathroom are not fully protected by sealed roof or 4-walls to keep the creatures out. While a villa may also have an open-air bathroom, which is quite common and lovely to experience while in Bali, the latter is usually a bit more upscale (depending on price range) and offers you more cover and closure. Of course, there are also a long slew of upscale to midrange hotels, motels, hostels, boarding houses and surf camps from which to choose, as well. If you are able, I recommend experiencing a villa for the greatest comfort and a full tropical experience.

SANUR

I selected to begin what was originally set to be 3 weeks in Bali in this sleepy, family-friendly village. Sanur has one main beach and a gorgeous Muslim temple, Pura Blanjong, that rests in the center of town along Jalan Danau Tamblingan. You can get around pretty easily on foot or by motorbike. I say avoid driving a car here, if possible. Like Kuta, its neighbor, Sanur is close enough to the airport to allow you to quickly roll off a plane and into your bed. However, unlike Kuta, where its visitors party hard, Sanur’s visitors party soft, making it more of a restful haven for middle-aged couples, retirees, families and the slower-paced sort. Because of its slower pace, I knew I probably wouldn’t be there for long but it provided the perfect peacefully jumping off point before I began to discover the other parts of the island.
My bungalow in Sanur had many wonderful assets; chief among them was a shared pool offered to a small gaggle of bungalow owners and renters. It was set right beside my bungalow allowing for easy access and had a meditation area set right beside it. The mediation altar was a sweet touch, allowing you to get zen before taking a dip in either the pool or by venturing a few meters down the road to popular Sanur Beach.

Sanur's beach is a simple but beautiful one. Once again, it provided the perfect place for rest and relaxation away from party-heavy areas like Kuta or Seminyak. I enjoyed strolling the short boardwalk, that houses a line of restaurants and even took a moment to stop and bask in the sun right after a long weekend of rain.

After 6 days in Sanur, I travelled north of Sanur to the most popular “get-your-yoga-mediation-zen-on” spot in Bali. Ubud. Initially, I was skeptical about this touristy "Eat, Pray, Love" section, but then I became enchanted and decided to extend my stay from 3 weeks to 4. Thirty days is the maximum time I was allowed to stay in Bali. On arrival, you will be granted a 30-day guest visa. If you want to stay longer, you will have to apply for a 90-day social and cultural visa when you arrive at the airport. It’s an somewhat involved process that can get costly and also will require 2 or 3 trips to the Embassy before approved.
While in Ubud, I also shifted from bungalow to villa. I was gifted with a private pool, which I enjoyed thoroughly. I took morning dips, afternoon dips and evening dips.

A DAY IN FIRA

Lost | And | Found

Between teaching while abroad, writing, traveling, documenting my journey and starting a new venture, I find myself exhausted. My days have been full. But so is my heart. I have met so many amazing people so far who have touched and inspired me along the way. Early yesterday morning, I came across a woman on the beach. She was crying as she watched the sunset. Concerned, I approached. Immediately, she opened up. She said she has cancer. Her doctor told her she has about a month left to live. For the first time she is taking nothing for granted, but finds herself determined to overcome her circumstance. I met a woman from Manchester who, at 56 years of age, is traveling alone for the 4th time in her life. Her husband left her for another woman after 33 years of marriage. Since her divorce was finalized earlier this year, Greece has been the 4th place she has travelled on her own while she “tries to find herself again.” I met a 35-year old woman from Korea who, as I was taking pictures, asked if I’d take hers too. She quit her corporate job this year because it was sucking her dry. “I had no life. I worked day and night.” She now wants to start her own trading company but is taking time to rediscover herself before she takes the plunge. I have listened to their stories, documented them and taken their pictures. Throughout, it has never ceased to amaze me how vital it is to one’s growth and self-empowerment for everyone to lose her way. In order to find it again.

These are the famous Tree Goats located in Tamri, just miles outside of Essaouira. The goats are said to climb up onto the branches to feast on the rich nuts and fruits in the Argania trees. Argan oil is a rare and profitable commodity in this area. Local women pound the seeds vigorously to produce as much of the desired oil as possible. The bizarre practice of allowing the goats to climb onto the branches to eat allows the farmers to protect their crops. Not to mention, the goats' nutrient-rich poop proves useful to the farmers in the cultivation their crops. Supposedly it's a win-win. It also creates quite the tourist attraction for those awe-inspired interlopers, like myself, who just happen to be roaming this part of Morocco during the goats' lunch break.

Happiness is when when you're about to to fly back home to NYC in 4 hours and you're operating on only 2 hours sleep but you decide to run around the city one last time after the rain has finally let up.  You then get lost but find your way to the front of Christianborg Palace and say: "I may miss my flight but F&@% it, I can cry or cherish the moment and take an exhausted selfie."
